The single theme that unites all of my work is empowerment.

It’s a mighty powerful feeling to stare down a steep ski run and know you can navigate it successfully. Helping people develop skills and confidence in the face of intimidating challenges has become my favorite professional calling. I’ve worked with countless ski clients to expand their skills into terrain they never imagined would be in their sights.

But this isn’t limited to the ski slopes. Today’s media environment is way more daunting than a black diamond mogul run. The din of polarized talking points, deliberate misinformation, and outright science denial can be a constant stressor. But who has the time to become an expert in each controversy?

The field of science communication emerged to fill this exact need, and not a moment too soon. Skillful communication offers the right information at the right times, spelled out in a way that empowers you to sort solid information from sketchy talking points.

I’m a geologist, science journalist, and skier. I reside in Bozeman, Montana – a place that offers brilliant skiing but is already reeling from the impacts of climate change. At the same time, Montana has enormous potential for renewable energy amid strong legacy of fossil fuel production. It’s a place that calls for engagement, every day.

I write about climate change and energy, for NASA and Yale Climate Connections.

Reading is time-consuming, so my current focus is on data-rich visuals, maps, and graphs.

Got granite? I help people understand natural stone and its uses, especially kitchen countertops.

Ponder your next ski adventure, and find ways to expand your ski or snowboard instruction skills.
